Introduction
In 1992 staff of the Department of Mäori Studies, Massey University, in response to pressure from tribes and other Mäori groups, recognised the need for a longitudinal study of Mäori households which would enable cultural, economic and personal factors to be correlated. Three years funding from the Public Good Science Fund enabled the study, known as Best Outcomes for Maori Te Hoe Nuku Roa, to begin in July 1994 and by 2004 had completed three rounds of interviews with over 550 households.
